Julius Caesar Act II : Scene II Summary
⇒ During the ongoing stormy night, Caesar's wife has a dream in which Caesar is murdered, causing her to try and convince Caesar to stay home that day. However, Caesar is initially determined to proceed with his plans.
⇒ Calphurnia, his wife, recounts unusual occurrences observed by the night watch – like graves yielding their dead and sounds of battle in the air. Still, Caesar insists that these disturbances are general and not personally relevant, and he's unafraid of death.
⇒ A servant then arrives, informing Caesar that even the priests advise him not to go out. Although reluctant, Caesar agrees to stay home. Enter Decius, who is assigned to escort Caesar to the Senate.
⇒ Caesar resists and reveals his wife's concerns without admitting his sickness. Decius argues that Caesar needs a better reason to avoid Senate, as the members might mock him.
⇒ Caesar then mentions his wife's dream of his statue bleeding, but Decius twists it into a positive interpretation – that Rome draws strength from him. Caesar is convinced.
⇒ Decius adds that the Senate plans to honour Caesar with a crown that day, implying that his absence might lead them to reconsider. He cleverly plays on Caesar's ego and fear of appearing afraid. Caesar changes his decision and decides to go to the Senate.
⇒ The conspirators, including Brutus, and other individuals, including Antony, enter. Caesar invites them for wine before heading to the capital
